What is ASI
Narrow AI. This is the AI of today. It can do individual tasks, often well, but only what it was built for.
AGI, artificial general intelligence. By definition it can perform all tasks a human can, as well as or better than the best expert. The people building it expect it within the next months to few years.
ASI, superintelligence. It goes beyond and surpasses humans many times over in practically everything. And it does not stand still.
Once the machine has reached human level, it can surpass itself within a short time, weeks, days, perhaps hours, by three, then ten, then thirty times, and onwards. The growth is not linear, it is exponential.
The gap from human to animal. An animal is not stupid, it lives in a different order of magnitude of understanding. We build roads, markets, and states, an animal cannot even grasp that as a question. A superintelligence opens precisely this gap between itself and us. Not a little smarter. A different order of magnitude.
The speed. Imagine the most capable minds in every field, working without sleep, many times faster than a human, and you can no longer follow what they are thinking. What is an hour for them is years for us.
Whether this intelligence ultimately behaves hostile, indifferent, or transformatively benevolent is open. What matters in practice is the transition to it, the moment when the old systems no longer reliably hold, work and income, supply chains, power, finance, the state at its limit. This transition arrives across all these paths, which is why we prepare for it and not for a single scenario. What ASI is at its core grounds the urgency. The preparation must hold across every outcome.
